Our Cause

For many years, our community support efforts have focused on helping people and families affected by breast cancer while contributing to organizations involved in cancer research, treatment, education, and patient care. What began from a personal connection to breast cancer developed into a long-term charitable initiative built around fundraising, community participation, special product programs, and partnerships with organizations working to improve outcomes for people affected by the disease.

The story behind this initiative is connected to Duncan, a valued member of our community whose experience with breast cancer had a lasting influence on those around her. Before receiving her diagnosis, Duncan had spent years involved in endurance sports and understood the dedication required to prepare for difficult challenges. Her background as a marathon runner and cyclist shaped her perspective on perseverance, movement, preparation, and continuing forward even when circumstances become difficult.

In October 2014, Duncan was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. During her experience, she continued to approach life with determination and encouraged the people around her to remain positive and engaged. Her personal experience affected colleagues, friends, athletes, and members of the wider community. Her story ultimately became the foundation for an effort intended to provide meaningful support to breast cancer research and organizations serving patients and families.

The charitable initiative was formally established in 2015 in Duncan’s honor. From its beginning, its purpose was to create an ongoing way for employees, customers, athletes, and supporters to contribute to breast cancer-related causes. Early support included partnerships with organizations involved in cancer research and patient care, including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. These relationships helped establish a broader commitment to supporting medical research and programs designed to assist people affected by cancer.

Over time, the initiative expanded beyond its original fundraising activities. Charitable contributions, special footwear releases, community events, employee participation, athletic activities, and partnerships have all played a role in maintaining the program. These different forms of participation allow people to contribute according to their own interests and circumstances while helping direct resources toward organizations involved in breast cancer research and patient support.

Cycling and endurance activities have become an important part of the community effort. Participation in the Pan-Mass Challenge has provided an opportunity for employees, athletes, and supporters to combine physical activity with fundraising. Team Duncan has been associated with this effort as a way of recognizing Duncan’s story while supporting fundraising connected with cancer research and care.

Team participation also reflects the connection between movement, community, and charitable action. People involved in cycling and other endurance activities can come together around a shared purpose while raising funds for organizations working in the cancer field. These activities provide an opportunity to remember Duncan’s experience and demonstrate how individual participation can contribute to a larger community effort.

Support has also extended beyond the United States. Contributions and partnerships have included organizations such as The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Supporting organizations in different regions allows the initiative to contribute to a broader network of institutions involved in research, treatment, patient services, education, and other cancer-related programs.

Duncan passed away in May 2019 after living with breast cancer. Her story remains an important part of the charitable initiative and continues to shape its focus on perseverance, compassion, community involvement, and meaningful support. The program provides an ongoing way to honor her memory while continuing efforts to direct resources toward organizations working to assist patients and advance breast cancer research.

Fundraising is an important component of the initiative. Over the years, contributions have been generated through a combination of product programs, employee participation, athletic events, customer involvement, charitable partnerships, and community activities. The combined effect of many individual contributions can provide substantial financial resources to organizations conducting research and delivering services to patients and families.

Special footwear collections provide another way for customers to participate. Certain products created specifically for the charitable initiative may be associated with designated contributions to breast cancer research or related organizations. Where applicable, a portion of proceeds from qualifying products may be directed toward charitable efforts. These programs allow customers to purchase footwear while also participating in a broader community initiative connected with breast cancer support.

The relationship between the footwear collection and charitable work is also connected to a broader understanding of recovery. Recovery is not limited to physical activity or physical comfort. For people living with serious illness, the recovery process can involve medical treatment, emotional support, family assistance, research, rehabilitation, and access to community resources. Supporting organizations involved in these areas can contribute to a more comprehensive approach to helping people affected by cancer.

Community involvement remains an important part of the program. Customers may participate through qualifying purchases, while employees and athletes can contribute through fundraising campaigns, sporting events, and other activities. Charitable organizations and medical institutions contribute through research, treatment, patient services, education, and specialized programs. Each group plays a different role, creating a network of participation around a shared charitable purpose.

The initiative is intended to continue beyond individual campaigns or limited seasonal activities. Breast cancer research requires ongoing support, while patients and families may need resources throughout different stages of their experience. Continued fundraising and charitable partnerships can help maintain attention on these needs and provide resources to organizations working in the field.

We recognize and appreciate the contributions of patients, families, caregivers, researchers, healthcare professionals, athletes, employees, customers, charitable organizations, and community supporters who have participated in these efforts. Every contribution, whether made through a purchase, fundraising activity, event, donation, or personal involvement, forms part of the larger community effort.

The initiative also reflects the idea that sustained participation can create meaningful support over time. A single contribution may be one part of a much larger effort, while repeated campaigns and continued community involvement can help provide ongoing resources to organizations addressing breast cancer. By maintaining charitable programs and partnerships, we seek to keep this commitment active and connected to the people and organizations doing important work in research and patient care.

The story that inspired this effort continues to serve as a reminder of the importance of community support. Duncan’s experience brought people together around a common purpose and helped establish a charitable program that continues to involve customers, employees, athletes, organizations, and supporters. Through fundraising, product-related giving, community events, and charitable partnerships, the initiative remains focused on supporting efforts related to breast cancer research and care.
